Drive-by Counseling

I ran across this story about a Chicago Law Firm that is taking some heat for their latest billboard which read, "Life is short. Get a divorce" while displaying a torso shot of a bare chested man and scantily clad woman.

The inference I perceive is, "life is too short to spend it married to someone who doesn't feel good anymore. You will be much happier if you get divorced and start having fun again."
Research says that this couldn't be further from the truth. One particular study, sited by Bryce Christensen in "In Sickness and in Health: The Medical Costs of Family Meltdown," Policy Review, Spring 1992, p. 71. says,
"Divorced adults are more susceptible to severe emotional and psychological problems, plus early death from an assortment of causes, than for married individuals. The suicide rate for divorced white men, for example, is four times higher than for their married counterparts. The situation for divorced adults is such that Harold Morowitz of Yale University contends, 'Being divorced and a non-smoker is slightly less dangerous than smoking a pack or more a day and staying married.'"
Though their billboard may be a clever way to draw more calls to their law office, it seems like the literal opposite of their ad campaign may be closer to the truth.
Brevity is the soul of wit. Now speak you mind.
